Plastic straws are over !

Plastic straws are over !

With the entry into force of the Agriculture and Food Law on 1 January 2020, France is embarking on "zero plastic". At Café Oz, plastic straws are out and biodegradable straws are welcome.

What does the law say ?

Since January 1, 2020 many plastic products have been banned:

  • disposable tableware (cups, glasses and plates)
  • the plastic Q-tips.

The As of January 1, 2021, the law evolves extends to other products :

  • Straws
  • Steak spades
  • Disposable glass lids
  • Supporting rod for a balloon

Why is this law in two stages? Because at the EU level it is from 3 July 2021 that all these plastic products will be banned. About ten categories of products will be banned if there are alternatives. EU Member States will have a maximum of 2 years to transpose and implement these bans. The target set for Member States is to collect 90% of plastic bottles by 2029. Bottles marketed in the EU will have to contain at least 25% recycled plastic by 2025 and at least 30% by 2030. Europe will then become, from 1 January 2021, the first continent to ban disposable plastic objects.

Different alternatives

Instead of plastic, we could work with plant-derived materials for so-called bio-sourced products in particular. These are materials derived from biomass of animal or plant origin.

And you, your alternative to plastic straw would be what ?

  • Bamboo straw

Bamboo is the strongest and most durable plant in the world. Straws are one of the best sustainable, ecological and natural alternatives to single-use plastic straws.  They are reusable because they are easy to clean (by hand, in the dishwasher or boiled) and are biodegradable and made of 100% organic material.

  • The stainless steel straw

The stainless steel straw is reusable at will. It is stainless and leaves no metallic taste. The stainless steel straw can be cleaned by hand with a small brush or put in the dishwasher.

  • Straw paste

Original and surprising, the straw paste is 100% edible and therefore biodegradable. They are perfect for cold and carbonated drinks.

  • Straw made of natural wheat straw

Wheat straw is made from a natural, economical and sustainable resource: natural and organic wheat stalks. It leaves no taste when rinsed. This straw is a natural product and is perfectly recyclable, it is solid and does not soften once soaked in the drink. Ideal with any type of drink (cocktails, juices, hot drinks).

At Café Oz

For several months now, all Café Oz have been using PLA (Polylactic Acid) straws. What is PLA? PLA straws are made from corn or potato starch and decompose in 1 year instead of 500 years for plastic straws. A small gesture for the planet.
